1997년 개막된 은 애니메이션과는 다른 참신한 연출과 환상적인 음악을 재탄생 시킨다. 연출가 줄리 테이머의 독특한 해석과 창의적인 디자인으로 진정한 브로드웨이의 을 만들 수 있었다. 또한 가면을 쓴 배우들은 인형극의 기술을 도입하여 수많은 동물들의 캐릭터를 표현하고 관객들은 가면과 인형 배우의 모습을 동시에 감상하게 된다. 뮤지컬 의 스토리는 'Circle of Life(윤회)'라는 심오한 테마를 중심으로 인간이 지닌 권력과 탐욕, 사랑과 우정, 슬픔과 기쁨 등이 담겨있어 보편적인 감동을 갖게 한다.
