작품설명

1991년 제작된 애니메이션 는 디즈니가 만든 최고의 걸작으로 찬사받으며, 전 세계적으로 대 성공을 거둔다. 이에 디즈니는 이 작품을 브로드웨이 뮤지컬로 변화시키는 작업을 시작했다.

브로드웨이와 디즈니의 일류 제작진들이 모여 만든 뮤지컬 는 디즈니 애니메이션 특유의 환상적인 세계와 만화적인 캐릭터들을 훌륭히 무대 위에서 재현시키면서도, 단순한 영화의 복제품에서 벗어나 공연작품으로서의 재 창조 작업이 성공적으로 이루어졌음을 증명해 보였다.

아카데미상을 수상한 앨런 멘켄과 하워드 애쉬먼의 애니메이션 오리지널 곡들과 애쉬먼이 가사를 쓰고, 영화에서 수록되지 않았던 한 곡, 토니상과 아카데미상 수상 경력의 팀 라이스가 멘켄의 곡에 가사를 붙인 여섯 곡 등 모두 7곡의 새로운 곡이 포함되어 는 무대 위에서 다시 태어났다.

영화와는 달리 야수도 무대 위에서 노래를 부르고, 영화에는 수록되지 않았던 ‘다시 인간이 되었으면(Human Again)’이 뮤지컬에 추가되어 스토리를 더욱 깊이 있게 만들었다. 또 이 곡을 포함, 7곡의 새 넘버들은 애니메이션을 깊이 있고 드라마적인 모든 연령대를 포용하는 뮤지컬작품으로 바꾸어 놓았다. 새롭게 포함된 곡으로는 ‘No Matter What’, ‘Me’, ‘Home’, ‘How Long Must This Go On?’, Changing in Me’, ‘Maison Des Lunes’ 등이 있다.

2004년 4월, 을 앞지르며 브로드웨이 뮤지컬 역사상 6번째로 장기 공연된 작품으로 기록되고 있으며 세계적으로 1,800만 명이 넘는 사람들이 이 뮤지컬을 관람했다.
