작품설명

뮤지컬 은 가스통 르루의 동명 원작소설을 작곡가 앤드류 로이드 웨버, 제작자 카메론 매킨토시, 연출가 해롤드 프린스 등 최고의 제작진들이 모여 뮤지컬로 탄생시킨 작품이다.

1986년 영국런던에서 초연된 이래 현재까지 웨스트 엔드와 브로드웨이에서 현재까지 장기 공연중이다. 은 2006년 1월 9일, 의 7,485회 공연기록을 깨면서 브로드웨이 최장기 공연으로 등극했다.

1986년 런던 올리비에 어워드 2개부문(최우수 작품상, 최우수 연기상), 1988년 뉴욕 토니어워드 7개 부문(작품상, 남우주연상, 여우조연상, 연출상, 무대디자인, 의상디자인, 조명디자인), 같은 해 드라마 데스크 어워드 7개 부문 수상 등 전 세계 50여 개의 주요상을 석권하며 명실상부한 최고의 뮤지컬로 인정받고 있다.

주옥같은 음악과 감동적인 러브스토리 외에도 이 관객을 사로잡는 또 한가지 매력은 바로 화려한 비쥬얼과 수준 높은 테크닉의 무대예술이다. 관객의 머리 위에서 무대로 떨어지는 실제 샹들리에, 수백 개의 촛불이 솟아오르는 호수 위를 유유히 흘러가는 보트, 화려한 무대 의상의 극치인 가면 무도회 장면, 각종 특수 효과 등은 무대라는 제한된 공간이 얼마나 마술처럼 놀랍게 별할 수 있는지 증명하며 수많은 볼거리를 제공한다.

CHARACTER(캐릭터)
팬텀 | 그의 출생이나 과거는 자세히 알려지지 않았으나, 태어나면서 이미 얼굴의 반쪽이 흉악한 괴물의 형상이었다고 전해지며, 미로 같이 얽힌 파리 오페라 하우스 지하에 숨어사는 음악의 천재이다.
 
크리스틴 다에 | 오페라 하우스의 발레단원이었으나 칼롯타가 출연을 거부하자 새로운 프리마돈나로 급부상한다. 같은 발레단원이자 친구였던 멕은 크리스틴에게 새로운 음악선생이 누구길래 그렇게 노래 실력이 좋아졌냐고 묻자, 크리스틴은 돌아가신 아버지가 음악의 천사를 보내주겠다고 유언을 남겼다는 말을 한다. 그리고 자신이 바로 그 음악의 천사라 주장하는 유령에게 이끌려 오페라 하우스 지하에 있는 유령의 은신처에서 그의 음악을 사사받는다. 
 
Character
라울, 드샤니 자작 | 오페라 하우스의 재정 보증인이자 귀족인 청년. 어린 시절 소꼽친구였던 크리스틴이 오페라 하우스의 여주인공으로 성장한 것을 알고 그녀를 찾아간다. 이후 크리스틴과 사랑에 빠져 비밀리에 약혼을 하지만, 그녀가 유령의 공포에서 헤어나지 못하는 것을 괴로워하며 유령의 정체를 밝혀 크리스틴의 공포를 해소시키려 한다.
 
칼롯타 기우디첼리 | 오페라 하우스의 여자가수. 뚱뚱한 몸매지만 크리스틴이 나타나기 전까지 최고 명성의 여가수로 손꼽힌다. 오페라 하우스의 남자가수인 피앙지와 사랑하는 사이. 그녀는 유령 소동의 배후에 크리스틴과 그의 약혼자 라울이 있다고 믿지만, 결국 유령의 저주를 받아 오페라 공연 도중 개구리 울음소리를 내는 변을 겪는다.
 
마담 지리 | 오페라 하우스의 발레 감독, 유령에 대해 가장 많은 것을 알고 있지만, 쉽게 말을 꺼내지 않는 묘령의 인물.
 
리챠드 피르맹 | 파리 오페라 하우스의 공동 운영자 중 한 명. 매사에 빈틈없이 행동하여 하지만, 그렇기에 다소 코믹한 캐릭터.
 
질레스 앙드레 | 피르맹과 함께 오페라 하우스를 인수한 또 다른 공동 운영자.
