이 작품은 상당한 부분이 뉴욕 뒷골목의 사실적 얘기와 사건을 서술한 것처럼 보이나 그것은 뉴욕의 얘기가 아니라 거대 문명사회 속에서 개인의 가치가 소멸되어 가는 각박한 삶의 현장에 사는 우리 모두가 무대 위의 인물과 일치한다.
