작품설명

뮤지컬 은 가스통 르루의 동명 원작소설을 작곡가 앤드루 로이드 웨버, 제작자 카메론 매킨토시, 연출가 해롤드 프린스 등 최고의 제작진들이 모여 뮤지컬로 탄생시킨 작품이다.
1986년 영국런던에서 초연된 이래 현재까지 웨스트 엔드와 브로드웨이에서 현재까지 장기 공연중이다. 은 지난 2006년 1월 9일, 의 7,485회 공연기록을 깨면서 브로드웨이 최장기 공연으로 등극했다.
1986년 런던 올리비에 어워드 2개부문(최우수 작품상, 최우수 연기상), 1988년 뉴욕 토니어워드 7개 부문(작품상, 남우주연상, 여우조연상, 연출상, 무대디자인, 의상디자인, 조명디자인), 같은 해 드라마 데스크 어워드 7개 부문 수상 등 전 세계 50여 개의 주요상을 석권하며 명실상부한 최고의 뮤지컬로 인정받고 있다.
주옥같은 음악과 감동적인 러브스토리 외에도 이 관객을 사로잡는 또 한가지 매력은 바로 화려한 비쥬얼과 수준높은 테크닉의 무대예술이다. 관객의 머리위에서 무대로 떨어지는 실제 샹들리에, 수백개의 촛불이 솟아오르는 호수 위를 유유히 흘러가는 보트, 화려한 무대 의상의 극치인 가면 무도회 장면, 각종 특수 효과등은 무대라는 제한된 공간이 얼마나 마술처럼 놀랍게 별할 수 있는지 증명하며 수많은 볼거리를 제공한다.
