스티븐 손드하임이 동명의 소설을 바탕으로 만든 뮤지컬는 휴 휠러 극본, 무대 연출의 거장 해롤드 프린스가 연출을 맡았다. 이 작품은 19세기부터 전해져 오는 ‘스위니 토드’의 전설을 바탕으로 만들어진 크리스토퍼 본드의 연극을 원작으로 하고 있다. 뮤지컬 는 거장 스티븐 손드하임의 작품 중 최고의 걸작으로 꼽히며 초연 당시 베스트뮤지컬상을 포함한 8개 부문의 토니상을 휩쓸었다.

이후 1984년에는 뉴욕 시티 오페라단이 자신들의 레퍼토리 공연으로 선보이면서 시카고의 리릭 오페라단, 캐나다의 칼가리 오페라단, 런던의 로얄 오페라단 등 세계 각국의 오페라단에서 단골로 공연되는 작품이 되었고 2004년 런던에 이어 2005년 브로드웨이 Eugene O’Neill Theatre에서 이 작품을 새롭게 구성, 연출하여 성황리에 공연을 마쳤다.

대부분의 작곡가들이 작사가와 따로 구분 되어 곡을 쓰는 반면 ‘손드하임’은 작곡과 작사를 동시에 하기 때문에 가사와 음악이 완벽히 일치되게 쓰는 작곡가로 유명하다. 뮤지컬계의 거장 손드하임의 수 많은 걸작 중에서도 뮤지컬 가 최고로 손 꼽히고 있는 이유는 바로 그로데스크한 전체 컨셉에 맞게 드라마, 무대, 음악이 유기적으로 완벽하게 결합되어 있기 때문이다. 따라서 뮤지컬의 음악은 굉장히 복잡하고 어려운 구조를 가지고 있음에도 불구하고 관객들은 드라마에서 굉장한 감동을 받으며 어려워하지 않는다. 오히려 작품은 음악과 함께 극을 보았을 때 비로소 진정한 가치가 드러난다. 바로 이러한 점이 오늘날 손드하임을 뮤지컬 역사에서 ‘가장 혁신적인 작곡가’라 부르고 있는 이유이다. 또한 그는 뮤지컬를 통해 무대 위 등장인물들이 때로는 하나의 무리가 되어 마치 해설자처럼 이야기를 들려주는 브레히트 서사극 형식을 다시 선 보인다.

는 한 개인의 복수심이 사회 전체에 대한 증오로, 결국에는 카니발리즘으로까지 발전해 나가는 과정을 설득력 있게 그려 가며 권력의 부패, 광기, 살인, 복수 등 어두운 이야기를 블랙코미디로 풀어가고 있다. 이 작품이 가지고 있는 부조리한 사회에 대한 비판은 각각의 캐릭터가 가진 상징성으로 표현된다. 극의 배경이 되는 19세기 영국의 런던은 산업혁명으로 인해 귀족문화가 정점에 달했고 귀족층과 상인들은 더욱 더 부자가 되어 갔다. 그러나 그 이면에는 가난과 빈곤으로 미래가 불투명한 소외된 노동자층이 있었다. 뮤지컬 의 공장, 감옥, 기계 등으로 구성 되어 있는 무대를 하나의 커다란 산업혁명이라고 보면 무대 위에 등장하는 주요 캐릭터들은 산업혁명이 초래한 문제점으로 인해 소외된 희생자들을 대변한다. 그리고 그들은 각자 나름대로의 방식으로 운명의 상처에 대처한다. 2007년 팀 버튼 감독, 조니 뎁 주연으로 영화화되었다.
