작품설명

대본 아서 로렌츠, 음악 레오나드 번스타인, 작사 스테판 손드하임의 뮤지컬. 셰익스피어 소설 <로미오와 줄리엣>을 기본으로 현대적인 대본으로 바꾸었다. 1957년 브로드웨이에 제롬 로빈스의 연출과 안무로 초연되었으며, 734회 공연의 장기흥행 기록을 세웠다. 이후 1961년 로빈스와 와이즈 공동 감독으로 나탈리우드, 리처드 베이머의 주연으로 영화화하여 11개 부문의 아카데미상을 수상하였다.
